HLRT Waterfall
"Love this river, stay by it, learn from it." Yes, he wanted to learn from it, he wanted to listen to it. It seemed to him that whoever understood this river, and its secrets, would understand much more, many secrets, all secrets. - From Siddhartha by Herman Hesse

HLRT Vision
HLRT endeavours to provide a local face for land protection efforts in the Little River Canyon and watershed, partnering with other conservation organizations to support and advance their work while also conserving land directly to fill the gaps in other organizations’ work across the region.

HLRT's activities support the following roles:

1. Honoring the memory of Shane Harper Hulsey in all its work
2. Being the “voice” of Little River Canyon, promoting protection across the state
3. Fostering partnerships
4. Serving as a nexus linking user groups and the local community

Our Vision for the future of the Little River Canyon and watershed:

1. Protected lands on the Canyon and in the watershed are managed and restored for their ecosystem value and function
2. Protected lands are placed in the hands of the public by increasing the size of The Preserve
3. The Little River has clean, pristine water and flows freely
4. The public understands the unique canyon ecology
5. Local communities surrounding the LRC take ownership over its protection
6. Local communities draw economic benefit from a protected canyon
7. The canyon provides low-impact outdoor recreational opportunities
8. The viewshed around the Canyon is protected and restored

HLRT Mission
To preserve The Little River by fostering good stewardship of the land throughout its entire watershed

The HLRT mission is based on a desire to honor the memory of Shane Harper Hulsey, a passionate environmentalist and kayaker, who had a special love for The Little River Canyon, where he lost his life in a boating accident. The subsequent outpouring of love inspired friends and family to bring about some good from his tragic and untimely death by helping protect one of Alabama’s most spectacular natural places.
